Fort Washington, Maryland is an unincorporated census-designated place in Prince George's County, Maryland. It is a prosperous community located in the suburbs of Washington, D.C., south of the downtown district and 7 miles to Alexandria, VA. It is the site of Fort Washington Park, which was for many decades the only defensive fort protecting Washington D.C. The fort, now maintained by the National Park Service, is a stone structure with a good cannon shot down the Potomac River. It is home to the Ft Washington Medical Center with other nearby medical facilities of Mt. Vernon Hospital in Alexandria VA and Hadley Memorial Hospital in Washington, DC. For any commuters, it has quick Amtrak access to Alexandria and Washington DC.
